In 2017, mala voadora had planned to dedicate 2020 to ‘endings’ – the way stories end, death, the end of civilisations, the end of the world. We would have preferred it to have had fewer connections with 2020, but that was the theme that will guide our activity as artists and programme-makers of this Uma Família Inglesa.
– In EVERYTHING NOT SAVED WILL BE LOST (text by Kieran Hurley for mala voadora), we prepare for the abandonment of planet Earth by the human species.
– In FESTIVAL, mala voadora invents a company that invents afterlives (based on Sum by neuroscientist David Eagleman).
– In TURMA DE 95, Raquel Castro tries to find out what fate befell the classmates who appear in her old ‘class photo’ (an autobiographical remake of a show by Alexander Kelly / Third Angel).
– In OFF, based on the text Dying that Chris Thorpe wrote for mala voadora, we tell a science fiction story about the end of a woman.
– In ODD SIZE BAGGAGE, António MV exhibits erased paintings.
So many things are ending. The world may well be ending. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop making theatre. The first and last shows in this programme are both premieres by mala voadora.
