The sweet Portuguese language, which when it crossed the sea became tropical and emerged as one of the most widely spoken in the world, embodies exoduses and spices nibbling at the lips and licking the ears of Camões. This language, now in shades of brazilwood and the softness of cotton, mixed with sugar, gold, coffee, sweat and blood, meanders in gerunds, dancing on p(r)o(f)ethical waves, speaking of loves, longing, pain, revolts, reparations. From the utopian soap operas of democracy, from radio to TV, Santa Barba embraces the affective memory of the fantasy about Brazilianness, making the fa(r)do a burning dream of resilience, resistance and celebration. Santa Barba is a former vow incarnate in a perennial offering to a grace achieved, called freedom. It’s a Saint (Barba) in a reliquary out of the closet.
