When Jorge Andrade read The Night Just Before the Forests by Bernard-Marie Koltès and wanted to play the role, he also learnt that Álvaro Correia had directed Miguel Loureiro in the same role shortly before. Faced with this kind of coincidence, we felt torn between thinking that (1) it’s interesting for different teams to make shows from the same texts, because it’s interesting to compare their respective approaches, and that (2) there are artists who lack the imagination to choose dramatic texts. We decided to take advantage of the circumstance: instead of moving away from the recent staging, we invited Miguel Loureiro to switch roles and now come and stage the text he had performed. A sort of ‘dance of the chairs’. Nicarágua Prologue – that’s what Loureiro’s remix of the text ended up being called – starts with a voice-over exercise at a table, and progressively wanders through the space, between the violence the character is talking about, phantasmagorias (namely photographs and projections of images of boys), and memories of the team’s week in Paris.
