Declaração de Dependência – Versão 2 addresses the relationship between diabetes mellitus, sugar and love, bringing together personal narratives and new forms of stage writing. In the performance, Diogo Liberano questions the cultural impact of the phrase ‘diabetics can’t eat sugar’, learnt since childhood, and transforms his relationship with this substance into a metaphor for investigating his own openness to sweetness and love. Diabetic since the age of six, the playwright revisits stories from 1994 to the present day, proposing that we review certainties that are often dead but continue to guide our relationships.
On stage, three different modes of writing are articulated: writing that is done through gestures and movements, writing that is done through the reading of previously written stories and, finally, writing that is done live, where the performer composes the actions and texts that are acted out and said to the audience each night. Declaração de Dependência – Versão 2 valorises the artistic experience as a living encounter and, in particular, celebrates the bet that ‘a sick person only exists if they are alive’.
The performance is a continuation of the homonymous project initiated by Liberano through his platform, Platô – Pesquisa e Produção. In this new version, he brings together partners from previous projects, such as playwright Gustavo Colombini and musical director Rodrigo Marçal, and sets up new encounters with lighting designer Tomás Ribas, choreographer Mayara Máximo, visual artist Jérémy Tomczak and producer Maria Carvalho Vasquez.

Declaração de Dependência – Versão 2 is co-produced by Bolsa de Criação Artistas Douro, awarded by mala voadora, with funding from Porto city council, and with the support of institutions such as CAMPUS Paulo Cunha e Silva and MEXE Associação Cultural.
