The “Barcelos Rooster” is Portugal’s most popular souvenir, sold as a knick-knack, key ring, fridge magnet, postcard… In Cantar de Galo, he comes to life. Haughty, he tells us his story: he saved a pilgrim wrongly accused of a crime from the gallows. But he’s not satisfied, he demands explanations and Salazar, the dictator who kept Portugal in the grip of fascism for 40 years, comes to the rescue. This is how the rooster learns that, after all, he is part of the manipulative nationalist fiction that Salazar invented. The Rooster recovers his vocation as a vigilante and sets out to take revenge on the populist Salazar. Cantar de Galo is a play written for Jorge Andrade by the American writer Robert Schenkkan, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award.
