Beaumarchais is an opera that is the result of a partnership between mala voadora, the composer, conductor and musicologist Pedro Amaral and the Gulbenkian Orchestra. It builds on Beaumarchais’ trilogy of plays The Barber of Seville, The Marriage of Figaro and The Guilty Mother, all of which have been adapted for opera in the past. The three new versions were recorded in a studio, which was set up on Teatro Nacional D. Maria’s stage. There will be a soundproof booth, microphones, mixing desks, monitors, all the infrastructure. And the technicians (metalheads) – members of the working class who, fulfilling their political and social vocation and echoing Beaumarchais’ dramaturgy, come into conflict with the privileged of the system: the singers. The narrative of the plays and the narrative associated with the stage situation (the recording studio) end up blending together and, in the end, everyone reconciles, uniting in a spoken word chorus.
