Following the Portuguese edition of the book Tribuna Negra: Origins of the Black Movement in Portugal, 1911–1933 (Tinta-da-China, 2023), Cristina Roldão, José Pereira, and Pedro Varela return to this project to explore the connections between Black History in Portugal and the international debate on the Black Atlantic(s). More than a mere “linguistic transfer,” the translation of this book for an English-speaking audience involves a twofold movement: breaking the structural silencing of Black History and challenging an international historiography that tends to position Portugal as an exception—if not erase it entirely—in the dominant narratives of the 20th century. Such biases cannot be overcome with mere contextualizing addenda. The translation of the book Tribuna Negra thus requires a creative process of research and reformulation of the narrative structure’s implicit assumptions—work to be carried out during the writing residency at Mala Voadora.
