In search of visibility, empowerment, a sense of belonging and TRANS* representativeness in Portugal, the lecture-performance “What Comes After Hope?” critically reflects on how the bodies of people outside the imposed norm of sex-gender-desire have been constructed and represented in the media over time in the imaginary of Portugal. A production of the Teatro Universitário do Porto, this lecture-performance has the artistic direction of transfeminist artist Hilda de Paulo, assistance, set design and art direction by Tales Frey and research support from the Gis Archive. The stories that served as inspiration for this creation, as well as the stories of each member of the team (considering the identifications and estrangements) are multiple and are part of the Gis Archive, which was organized and has been permanently updated by Hilda de Paulo, in order to know and, above all, to bring to light the representations of TRANS* people in Portugal. This collection of information seeks to honour the obstinacy of people who have always been unjustly stigmatized in our cisheterocentric culture, and also proposes to rescue their transcestralities in a move opposite to History always written with a capital H. From a recognized minusculinity in the face of the hegemonic system, among the scraps and crumbs of survival thrown to TRANS* people in recent decades, Hilda de Paulo has gathered journalistic articles, television interviews, historical documents, biographical and autobiographical books in an archive called Gis, which refers to the Brazilian transvestite Gisberta Salce.
