As part of the Radioatividade program, Mala Voadora provides educational outreach in schools across the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, under the direction of sociologist Cristina Roldão, who is recognized for her work on racial inequalities, educational exclusion, and Black history in Portugal, and is a leading voice in the public debate on anti-racism and education. She is a researcher at ISCTE and a professor at the Setúbal School of Education, where she directs the course on the Promotion of Ethnic and Racial Equality.
The educational sessions in schools across the municipality of Santiago do Cacém will focus on racism and will take place from May 11 to 15, using anti-racist literary materials such as *Aventureira Marielle* and *O Dia da Fotografia* by Nuna and Laura Berekai.
The researcher’s proposal is to transform practices, processes, and representations within institutional contexts and daily life, with the aim of building a more inclusive society. We need greater knowledge and capacity for critical reflection on these issues, as highlighted in the National Plan to Combat Racism and Discrimination and recommended by the National Council for Citizenship Education and Anti-Racist Education.
In this context, and recognizing the central role of public schools in fostering democratic citizenship, these sessions on racism aim to create a space for informed debate, the sharing of tools, and the development of skills within educational communities. The initiative aims to contribute to more inclusive school practices by strengthening the ability of teachers, students, and other professionals to identify inequalities, prevent discrimination, and promote ethnic and racial equality. To this end, there will be an initial in-person training session on May 8 at the António Chainho Municipal Auditorium.
