Writing the history of Rivoli is recording defining moments in the life of the city. Our unique history is part of that of the city, it marks its places with each brief, relevant moment. Rivoli lies between big and small history, from a collective scale to the most intimate one, ever since the early 1930s, when opera and theatre dominated the city’s artistic landscape. It even brought sound to film, which was an innovation at the time. Rivoli is a place that crossed many generations, rather different political and social backgrounds, and good and not so good periods. Most importantly, it is a place of renewal and reinvention.

Although "Western History" tells us that during the Renaissance, classical culture served as a key reference for the West as it entered a period of anthropocentrism, classical mythology, also constitutes a universe of miscegenation between the human and the non-human. Putting aside the considerable differences in terms of the historical context, Ovid's Metamorphoses now seem to resonate within the context of the philosophical breakdown of human supremacy.
November 6th at 1 p.m. Gods in Color - Talk/Lunch with Vizenz Brinkmann . Forum of the Future . mala voadora
The white marble used in Greek and Roman temples and statues is one of the greatest symbols of Classical Antiquity. This marble can be found in Art History books, museums, and surviving monuments, and it was precisely this material that that was used to produce copies of these objects - during the Renaissance, Neoclassicism and the various revivals of Classicism in Europe and North America - and which continue to be replicated today. In this context, white marble has become synonymous with good taste, and people who know how to appreciate and surround themselves with references to Antiquity. But is it right to associate white with classical aesthetics?

Story #1 is a reflective consideration of how and why we construct narrative. Greg Wohead and Rachel Mars, in the first piece of an ongoing collaboration between them, made to themselves to create something very unlike what they’d tackled previously in their solo work: they’re interested in exploring where danger can poke through the narrative and intersect with the ‘real’. In TV everything is behind a screen. In performance where we acknowledge from the top that we are all in a room together, the ‘realness’ of that - the real-time shifting boundaries of that contract - presents danger far aside from content.

This show can be set up in any part of the world, simply by following the instructions guidelines, just like a DIY manual.

10 November (7 pm) . talk Voluntary Human Extinction: Fresh Hope for Planet and People with Les U. Knight/VHEMT . Forum of the Future, Galeria da Biodiversidade (Jardim Botânico)
All human societies encourage procreation, what we short-sightedly call “having children.” This natalism is the natural result of evolution. Throughout our existence, societies which didn’t encourage procreation were overcome by those which did. Although continued growth of our numbers has become a disadvantage, our cultural conditioning prevents us from recognizing this fact. We have been taught that creating another of us is always worthy of celebration. Pair bonding, procreation, and child rearing comprise our default life. Likewise, the idea of our species ceasing to exist in the future is simply unthinkable, though we seem willing to accept tens of thousands of other species’ extinction. Their extinction is considered an unfortunate consequence of our expansion into their habitat — we all have to live somewhere. Wherever we live, not much else lives.
11 November (7 pm) . talk Next Nature: How Technology becomes Nature with Koert van Mensvoort . Forum of the Future, Teatro Rivoli
Interactive paint, medical candy, lab grown meat and the Twitter tooth are a just few of the products that might hit the shelves in the future. Dr. Van Mensvoort designs speculative products to provoke debate on the new technologies that are transforming our lives. Wild systems, genetic surprises autonomous machinery, and beautiful black flowers. Our technological environment has become so complex, omnipresent and autonomous that it becomes a nature of its own. Yet, despite our deep-rooted relationship with technology, most of us are still relatively unaware of how new technologies are introduced, accepted or discarded within our society. Dr. Van Mensvoort will show how technology becomes nature in seven steps and what engineers, inventors, designers and entrepreneurs can learn from that.

[...] The story teller is, at the same time, in the center, intimately, and far on the horizon. He's the horizon, with the story of one side, and in the other, with the universal."

Beaumarchais is the result of a partnership between mala voadora with the composer, conductor and musicologist Pedro Amaral. It is an opera inspired by three texts of Beaumarchais – The Barber of Seville, The Marriage of Figaro and The Guilty Mother – which already have been, all of them, adapted for opera in the past. The three new versions will be live recorded in a studio mounted on the stage of Dona Maria (National Theatre). There will be the proper soundproofed recording cabin, microphones, mixing tables, monitors, all the infrastructure, catering, technicians, cleaning crew, staff, public relations, everything. There will be true workers – elements of the working class who, fulfilling their political and social vocation, will claim for their rights, fight, make revolutions, lynch their oppressors. This show could be called Revolutionary Riots in the Deutsche Grammophon, or Class Struggles at Decca (this one is less glamorous). Beaumarchais would like it.

This was the romance mala voadora adapted to theatre, to do a show called Pirandello.
Festival is a sci-fi show. The action takes place in an office, where you can go in and out by some doors. In this office, there are people working. Their job is to imagine what may be life after death and their professionalism rests in their capacity to speculate (ideas like Heaven or reincarnation will seems inexperient's job). They dedicate their time to the non-imagined-yet.
We can’t help living in the future: booking flights for our holidays, organizing birthday parties, writing applications, sending invitations, producing t‐shirts
for tours... all of this are merely suppositions. When the time comes, those things may happen according to plan, or not. What if we could rewrite History? Or, at least, what if we could imagine that things might have gone a different way? Or anticipate all possible paths leading us to‐wards the future, so we could be prepared for any possible scenario? Or actually live in anticipation a certain event believing it will definitely happen?

mala voadora does a Hamlet - from Shakespeare's version of the play known as “the bad quarto”.
Our work is not based on repertory. But we like “plays”. With the same conviction as we don't limit ourselves to them. Plays, from the most ancient to the newest, are raw materials that we manipulate with as much freedom as we feel necessary to the show (text servicing the show and not the other way around).

This project is a reflection about love and death. How do we prepare ourselves to love? How do we prepare ourselves to death? We prepare a rendez-vous with the meticulous care of who prepares a terrorist attack. In both cases, anyone would think we're crazy if they knew all the details invested in this preparations. We intend to explore and feed the tensions between the lonely hero's narrative, who's always ready for everything, with the action fields where the preparation's idea is maybe absurd and dramatic: the love and death.
