AN ENGLISH FAMILY 2019
from September 27th to October 6th . AN ENGLISH FAMILY 2019 . mala voadora and Mosteiro S. Bento da Vitória
An English Family’s fifth edition. It all started when we used this Júlio Dinis’ title to finish a text called “Nós e os Ingleses” (Us and the British) that we wrote for British Council when Tim Etchells was 2014 Lisbon’s City Artist; and we are now doing, in 2019, this festival’s fifth edition. Or almost-a-festival, due to its family dimension. We started by gathering mostly the British artists we were doing shows with, but then the friends of their friends came and the family started to grow. We have counselors, we go to Edinburgh, we watch videos. We choose the ones we like the most. We have already hosted at mala voadora: Ben Wheatley (in a cinema cycle), Chris Thorpe, Deborah Pearson, FK Alexander, Forced Entertainment (in the portuguese version of Quizoola!), Greg Wohead, Ira Brand, Lucy McCormick, Rachel Mars, Third Angel and Xavier de Sousa (who’s portuguese but emigrated). We couldn’t be more proud of this family.
This An English Familly’s fifth edition is focused on female artists and on women narratives, that is, narratives in which the perspective of the world is built by women. It is an edition made with british theatre’s “political implication”, an edition in time of #MeToo; but that doesn’t want to be simplistic. It includes the shows:
1. It’s True, It´s True, It’s True, by Breach Theatre – a recreation of a 17th century trial, in which a painter who has been raped ends up being treated as the defendant;
2. Contra, by Laura Murphy – the artist’s reflection about the female condition of her body and of her life experience;
3. Oh Yes, Oh No, by Louise Orwin – a confrontation between feminist conviction and the sexual fantasies of being dominated by men;
4. #womenandpower, by mala voadora – a conference-show by Maria Jorge about the women’s exercise of power throughout History, based on Mary Beard’s investigation;
5. MON€Y, by mala voadora – a text that mala voadora comissioned to Deborah Pearson, in the realm of money centered company’s activity in 2019;
6. Locker Room Talk, by mala voadora – a Gary McNair’s text in which men obscene talks about women are reproduced by a group of actresses.
And there are more news!
It is the first time mala voadora premieres a show – MON€Y – at mala voadora!
It is the first time the family goes out: Locker Room Talk is presented at São Bento da Vitória Monestry (São João National Theatre)
