mala voadora

Hamlet

mala voadora does a Hamlet - from Shakespeare's version of the play known as “the bad quarto”.

Our work is not based on repertory. But we like “plays”. With the same conviction as we don't limit ourselves to them. Plays, from the most ancient to the newest, are raw materials that we manipulate with as much freedom as we feel necessary to the show (text servicing the show and not the other way around). We never saw much point in enshrining the text and, as Fernando Villas-Boas explained to us, neither did Shakespeare.

This is the first time we do a Shakespeare. Maybe is hasn't happened before because of our mistrust concerning the idea of a “classic”. It is a play where theater is ever-present: the theater company included in the narrative, a play (falsely!) quoted within the play, Hamlet as stage director, a father that stages his own daughter who in turn acts for her father, a set of characters that cunningly stage circumstances and act out roles to each other. Besides the metatheatre dimension that originates from this, what really interested us was the playful possibilities that the play offers towards “make-believing”.
