Dois por Dois is the international residency programme promoted by mala voadora with the support of the Municipality of Porto.

In case you’re wondering, ‘dois por dois’ stands for something like ‘two for two’. That is because this residency programme will use our two apartments upstairs to host two artists or curators every year - one from the performing arts and the other from any other art form - that could benefit from this and as long as mala voadora is an adequate space for the work involved.

Every year, we will invite 3 partner organizations to help us to select artists that could be interested in the residency opportunity. Why did we decide on bringing external people on board, instead of just choosing ourselves or making an open call or any other type of application procedure? First off, we wanted to avoid the pitfalls that we recognize in the 'application' model, such as the difficulties in organizing a fair application process for artists working in different corners of the world, with different levels of access to information, etc; or the need to deal with an enormous amount of information for such a small artistic structure with very limited resources as we are. But most of all, we wanted this to be an opportunity for us to become involved in discussions with people who know our work, whom we trust and who we feel can surprise us more than an open call process would eventually do. We are confident that relying on these people/organizations may bring about more exciting proposals than all the hygienic hassle of organizing a 'transparent' application process. We prefer to get our hands dirty with the discussions and the decision. And that resonates with the kind of programme that we are aiming to set up as well: to create a work and research opportunity for artists that we would not meet otherwise, allowing them to develop their work with maximum freedom (no annual theme, no mandatory presentation of results at the end).
