For several years, Jorge Andrade wanted to stage Oscar Wilde’s play Lady Windermere’s Fan: A Play About a Good Woman – a satire on Victorian moralism. Afterall, it was the first professional play he did as a performer. The play is a classic of Western dramaturgy that has been staged hundreds of times, and somehow he didn’t feel like adding yet another version. In 2013, after listening to a radio version of the play, Jorge thought: what if instead of making up a totally brand new version he just used that version he had just listened to? What if all the characters he couldn’t see in that version were all dressed as Lady Windermere? And what if the text were to use as a soundtrack for the show? A show where the performers move according to the musicality of what they say, lip-sync, act over the recording, get together to play the same character, sing and perform choreographies? And, most important, what if he invited choreographer Miguel Pereira to join in?

Wilde is an appropriation of Lady Windermere’s Fan produced by BBC Radio 7. It is a show  in which the performative formal aspects acquire a progressive freedom as the libertarian narrative unfolds.
